Hey, how about we leave Christians alone for a bit? I’m sure this image feels like turning the tables on things Christians have said to us, but maybe we could stop trying to be so hostile to a group that is often included in a lot of pagan practices?

I am assuming, here, that the author of this macro is not a member of a reconstructionist group, so correct me if I’m wrong. However, if you will allow me to assume a bit more, I would likely guess that they are also Neo-pagan, much of which is derived from Wicca (if the New Age section) is anything to go by.

A lot of Wicca was inspired by Aleister Crowley, whom you might recognize as the founder of the Golden Dawn. But what you might not be aware of is that while Crowley’s systems were largely inspired by appropriating Egyptian mythos, a lot of them also had some roots in Kaballah, Jewish mysticism.

Another thing that might make you a bit uncomfortable is that tarot cards, which are largely hailed as a pagan tool (although may be used in a secular sense) originally had Catholic imagery. You will note that the Priestess resembles the Virgin Mary and the Hierophant looks an awful lot like The Pope. Even modern tarot guidebook authors like Eden Grey are not shy to mention the importance of YVHY in the symbolism.

I know its kind of easy to poke fun at the Christians as a means of shirking off your Christ-centric programming, but I think that its important to understand the amount of synthesis that happened in regards to how the modern conception of Paganism was formed. This image, also, really is hurtful for people who recognize the synthesis of the two and are keen to incorporate Jesus and other characters from the pantheon into they’re practice. Because for the one, it makes Christians seem like blind little sheep, which they are not always. For two, it makes Pagans look like petty little shits, which they are not always. But sometimes, with the frequency that these macros circulate, I wonder.

Basically what I’m gunning for here is some coexistence.

I think the thing that gets me about these sorts of comments is that people assume that we don’t know all this already.

It’s… kind of common knowledge? I honestly don’t know a single Christian who hasn’t heard this a thousand times before.

So the “silly Christian” part is not only insulting to my intelligence, but makes you seem like that guy at parties who’s always telling really old jokes.
